November Technical Meeting 12 November 2008 - The Next Generation of Trip Generation. WDCSITE colleagues heard from Dan Hardy of MNCPPC, Chair of the ITE Transportation Planning Council, who spoke about the new 8th Edition of ITE’s Trip Generation Handbook and recent research in transportation planning. 13 December 2007 WDCSITE colleagues enjoyed our Annual Business Meeting and December Luncheon. Ms. Kathleen Linehan Penney from the District of Columbia Department of Transportation and Ms. Greer Johnson Gillis from Parsons Brinckerhoff were our guest speakers and discussed the Transportation Management Plan for the Douglas Bridge/South Capitol Street Closure.

14 November 2007 Technical Meeting - Linthicum, MD. WDCSITE colleagues heard three fine speakers discuss current policies and projects related to Work Zone Traffic Control and Analysis.

14 June 2007- WDCSITE Dinner Meeting Microsimulation Tools. Capitol City Brewing Company, Shirlington, VA. Members enjoyed a technical presentation and discussion on microsimulation tools.

11 May 2007 - Traffic Simulation Roundtable Discussion, at Kittelson & Associates in Baltimore.

20 March 2007 – joint meeting with ASHE, Engineers Club, Baltimore, Maryland. WDCSITE colleagues heard a variety of speakers discuss current Maryland Traffic and Planning topics. This meeting was jointly sponsored by the Chesapeake Section of ASHE (American Society of Highway Engineers).

21 February 2007 - Annual Awards Dinner honoring the contributions and achievements of local members in the transportation profession. This was also be our first Technical Meeting of 2007. Attendees heard a presentation by Ms. Roxane Mukai of the Maryland Transportation Authority regarding the future Express Toll Lanes in Maryland. The presentation focused on the signs and markings for these variably-priced lanes.

30 January 2007 - Technical Meeting. Mr. Sam Zimmerman (World Bank) discussed "A Critical Look at BRT in Developing Countries".

6 December 2006 - Annual Business Meeting and December Luncheon. Ms. Karina Ricks from the District of Columbia Department of Transportation discussed the Great Streets Program. The Section will also held a brief Business Meeting during lunch.

14 November 2006 - The Federal Highway Administration, Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center (TFHRC) in McLean, Virginia has invited the WDCSITE to visit their facility on November 14, 2006, 3:30-5:30 pm.  At that time, Dr. Ray Krammes of FHWA will describe the development and use of the new Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM). Following Dr. Krammes’ presentation, Mr. Dan Nabors of VHB will discuss the application of IHSDM on several recent projects.

21 September 2006, Technical Meeting, Arlington Holiday Inn. Members heard a variety of speakers discuss current local & national efforts related to Customer Based Level of Service, FHWA Congestion Management Applications, and state-of-the-art in Airport Landside Transportation Planning.

8 September 2006, "Younger Member" Meeting. Tour of the Prince George's County, Maryland TRIP (Traffic Response and Information Partnership) Center and lunch.

15 August 2006, "Technical" Meeting. We watched the Washintgon Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves at RFK Stadium!

27 July 2006, met Matthew Tucker, Virginia's new Director of Rail & Public Transportation. Meet & Greet, followed by a luncheon program. This was a joint meeting with the Washington DC Chapter of the Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS). Check out the write up on the WTS website here!

23 June 2006. Nationals at Orioles baseball game. Attendees enjoyed a pre-game reception at the Babe Ruth Museum. This was a joint event with ITS MD.

25 May 2006. Vienna, VA. Guest Speakers and Topics: Ling Li (Virginia Department of Transportation) Topic: VDOT NOVA Smart Traffic Center Functions, Operations and Future Plans. Ron Kirby (Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments) Topic: Implementing Managed Lanes on the Freeway System in the Washington Region.

18 May 2006. Maggianos Little Italy Restaurant in Friendship Heights NW Members were treated to a lively Energy Panel discussion addressing the increasingly severe energy crisis afflicting our nation.

11-12 May 2006. District 2 Annual Meeting, Frederick MD. This well attended event included sessions on: Travel Demand, Non Traditional Intersections, Transit, Traffic Signal Operations, Funding Transportation Projects with Tolls, Pedestrian Safety, Road Safety Audits, Land Use and the Transportation Connection, Mega Transportation Projects and Transportation Systems Management and Operations. Truly something for everybody! Follow this up with a round of golf and we had a great meeting!

27 April 2006 - Tour of the Federal Highway Administration, Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center. Attendees saw the driving simulator, the "bowling alley" lab where sign retroreflectivity is tested and the area where barrier systems are crash tested.

6 April 2006 Spring Technical Meeting - Mr. Mark Krysiak, Maryland Port Administration head of Contract Administration spoke on security issues and new programs for the Port of Baltimore.

15 March 2006 Joint ASHE/ITE Meeting - Members enjoyed a presentation on Old Town Village Redevelopment in Fairfax City. Fairfax City is undergoing a major transformation, including redevelopment of several downtown parcels to create new restaurants, shops and attractions. The presentation featured a discussion of the traffic and roadway modifications associated with this project.

7 April 2005 - Awards Dinner and Technical Meeting College Park Holiday Inn. Our February 24th Awards dinner was cancelled due to inclement weather. WDCSITE rescheduled the annual Awards Dinner honoring the contributions and achievements of local members in the transportation profession. This was our first Technical Meeting of 2005. We saw a presentation by Mr. Wesley Mitchell, the Maryland State Highway Administration’s Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering Project Manager for the ICC. Mr. Mitchell presented an update of the planning efforts for the ICC, and provided an opportunity for the ITE membership to ask questions about this large project.

2 December, 2004 - Annual Business Meeting and December Luncheon: WDCSITE colleagues met for lunch at the Market Inn Restaurant in Washington DC for an interesting presentation on the planning and coordination efforts for major downtown DC events. Guest Speaker: Ms. Beauty Stephens, Special Event Coordinator Curbside Management Division Traffic Services Administration DC Department of Transportation

25 October, 2004 - October Technical Meeting, Holiday Inn - Eisenhower Metro Center, Alexandria, VA: Bob Garbacz, P.E., Transportation Division Chief for the City of Alexandria, spoke to a lunchtime crowd of WDCSITE members at the Holiday Inn on October 25th. Close to 30 people attended to hear about the City's program to install the flashing yellow arrow indication for permissive left turns. Bob gave some of his reasons for considering the new indication - safety and efficiency and some of the hurdles both institutional (Assistant City Manager who is an attorney) and technical (two solid amber arrow displays in the same phase) that he has had to overcome to get the first site up an running. His presentation prompted a number of questions and a lively discussion on whether drivers will understand and accept the flashing yellow arrow.

We were fortunate to have In the audience Ray Derr from the Transportation Research Board. Ray managed the NCHRP project "Evaluation of Traffic Signal Displays for Protected/Permissive Left-turn Control" which resulted in NCHRP Report # 493. 13-14 May, 2004 - District 2 Annual Meeting, Greenbelt Marriott: We enjoyed another successful District 2 Annual Meeting, with nearly 150 registered for the two day event. Dr. Jonathan Upchurch opened with an update on the progress of the reauthorization of the Transportation Bill SafeTEA. No bets on when we will see a signed bill. Thursday evening, attendees were treated dinner with a discussion regarding the media perspective on transportation presented by Bob Marbourg of WTOP. Along the way on both days there were opportunities to visit with our vendor sponsors, network with members from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, District of Columbia and Virginia and enjoy lots of great food. On the technical side, session topics included professional development, traffic signal operations, managed lanes, safety, pedestrian & bicycle initiatives, transit initiatives and transportation planning. Speaking of hot topics, High Occupancy Toll lanes drew a large audience. Day two included a tour of the inner workings of WMATA's Metro Maintenance Facility in Greenbelt and for those of us who believe a bad day at the golf course is better than a good day in the office, the links at Patuxent Greens in Laurel, MD was the place to be. 1 April, 2004 - Techical Meeting, BWI Airport Marriott: Our second Technical Meeting of 2004 provided WDCSITE members and guests a recap of the recent I-95 tanker fire (the one in Baltimore) sequence of events, a summary of the extraordinary inter-agency coordination, and a discussion of the resultant accident investigations and safety audits. Corporal Reynold Giese of the Maryland Transportation Authority Police, Crash Reconstruction Unit, Mr. Alvin Marquess of Maryland SHA-CHART, and Ms. Roxane Mukai, P.E., P.T.O.E., of the Maryland Transportation Authority, Division of Engineering, presented information of interest regarding this catastrophic event.

26 February, 2004 - Awards Dinner, Holiday Inn College Park: Phil Tarnoff presented a summary of research projects the University of Maryland is currently completing for nearby
jurisdictions (MD-SHA, VDOT, DelDOT, FHWA). View photographs of the event here.

4 December, 2003: Annual Business Meeting and December Luncheon - Market Inn Restaurant: Following the induction of this years WDCSITE officers, Mr. Scott Wainwright & Mr. Ernie Huckaby, FHWA Office of Transportation Operations – MUTCD Team treated us to a discussion of what’s been added and what’s changed in the new 2003 edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. 18 November, 2003: The Washington DC Section of ITE was invited by VDOT to attend the 3rd Annual National Capital Region Incident Management Conference at the Dulles Expo Center. The conference, with the theme "Are We Speaking The Same Language?" brought together transportation and public safety professionals for panel discussions, interactive sessions, exhibits and equipment displays.

17 September, 2003: 30 members of WDCSITE ate donuts on a dock in Alexandria, Virginia prior to setting sail on a few hours tour of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge construction site. Over 130 souls boarded the Miss Christin on a day with clear blue skies for the tour led by WWB construction managers.

5 August, 2003: Orioles Baseball Outing - A small but enthusiastic group (four of us) met for beverages and some dinner prior to the game; a slightly larger but equally enthusiastic group (seven of us, including Stephanie's daughter!) then attended the game. We were treated to a solidly-played 3-2 Orioles win, and were given seats in front of several hundred midshipmen (midshippersons?). Based upon the lines at the concession stands, the middies are apparently not fed very much at the Academy........

29 May, 2003: The rain held off for a social outing of good food and fun by the State Highway Administration's Office of Traffic and Safety Picnic Pavilion on Thursday, May 29, 2003. There was plenty of food and fun and information about upcoming State Highway contracts as we were joined by Mr. Barry King, Mr. Ron Lipps, Manu Shah and Eric Tabacek (who turned *0 that very same day) and several others from OOTS.

8-9 May, 2003: The District 2 Annual Meeting was a great success. We had a large group of attendees who were treated to many interesting presentations by some outstanding speakers. The keynote speaker, Alfred H. Foxx, Director of Transportation, Baltimore City gave an interesting presentation on the state of the City's transportation system. Social activities included an enjoying evening of dinner followed by indulging in the Inner Harbor's offerings, as well as great tours of the Oriole's and Raven's stadiums.

10 April, 2003: The Technical Meeting and Awards Dinner was held on April 10th at the BWI Airport Marriott and was well attended. About 70 people enjoyed a great meal and experienced timely presentations by Eric Tabacek - MSHA (In-pavement crosswalk lighting, Countdown pedestrian signals) and George Branyon - MSHA (Pedestrian Safety).

14 March, 2003: The Social Committee in coordination with the Maryland State Highway Administation's Office of Planning and Preliminary Engineering hosted a St. Patrick's Day weekend Happy Hour on Friday, 3/14, at the Bay Cafe in Canton on the edge of the Baltimore Harbor. This was an opportunity to have fun and interact with others in the Transportation profession.

27 February, 2003: WDCSITE's first Technical Meeting of 2003. We had the opportunity to hear a discussion from Charlie Watkins, SHA’s District Engineer for Montgomery and Prince George’s Counties (District 3). Charlie will discussed the challenges he faces in maintaining a safe and efficient regional highway system, particularly under anticipated SHA funding constraints.
